Alienware revamps the Area 51 gaming desktop with unique triangle case

If you're after a top-of-the-line gaming desktop with powerful internals, Alienware's latest Area 51 might be for you. The pre-built system from the company features a unique triangle design that's easy to customize as well as being visually impressive, placing the internal components at an angle that differs from traditional towers.

The Area 51 is designed for high-end parts, packing a liquid-cooled Intel Haswell-E enthusiast processor out of the box. It supports up to three graphics cards in either SLI or CrossFire, unobstructed by cables and other parts to allow the case's cooling system to vent air upwards and at an angle.

Behind one of the side panels are spots for five drives, kept in a separate zone that helps with airflow and cooling. There's also a spot for a slim optical drive if disks are still your thing, while the angled front panel gives quick access to two USB 3.0 ports.

The base model will set you back $1,699, which comes loaded with an Intel Core i7-5820K, an AMD Radeon R9 270 GPU, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 2 TB hard drive. Configuration options allow you to upgrade to an i7-5960X, 32GB of memory, a 512GB SSD with 4TB of HDD storage, and three Nvidia GeForce GTX 980s, although the case allows easy access to the components if you want to upgrade it yourself.

Like Alienware's Graphics Amplifier and the Alienware 13 gaming laptop, the Area 51 will be available from today.

I`ve been dreaming for egg-like cases or in any way circular shaped for better cooling and this design looks like a step forward. Too bad it`s not sold separately and too bad case manufactures in general are stuck in the 80`s.

Who configures these things? why are you starting so a powerful processor with such an anemic graphics card? especially in a build of that price...

Circular shaped for better cooling?! What does the shape of the case have to do with cooling?

Stuck in the 80's.... WHAT?! Maybe you need to go look up some of the cases available because heck they certainly don't just come in square white boxes anymore. If you want cooing get one of those inwin frames or something.

Or if actually are serious about cooling at a water cooling kit.

I don't see how an egg shaped case can in anyway have better cooling potential then say a HAF. The form factor is exactly that, a from factor, this has to remain that way or the PC industry would be completely inconsistent. Besides, most components in a PC are brick shaped, square, rectangles. Even if the case was an egg on the outside, a square chassis would be required internally, thus being less space efficient.

Come to think of it, it does look very similar to modern PCs
