Despite some underwhelming moments, Sony’s new PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset is a great-sounding, ultra-comfortable pair of cans that can make some of the best looking games sound even better.
Sony’s Platinum Wireless Headset provides a great audio experience and solid design, but there are a few caveats. The product’s level comfort will vary between users due to the ergonomic choices Sony made--slanted inner drivers, slightly tight head clamp, and stiff earpads. Those features might be just right for one person, but may compromise its usability for another.
The general quality of materials is a step up, but the preceding Gold model still holds its weight for the price, often appearing on sale for as low as £50. If you're in the market for new PS4 headphones, and fancy future-proofing yourself for 3D audio, the newer set is an easy one to recommend. Even if you're willing to gamble against 3D support taking off, it's still competitive with the many high-quality competing headsets out there.
As it stands, there's no reason to buy the Platinum headset just yet. For $10 more, you can get the well-reviewed Astro A30, which, while it doesn't support 3D audio, still sounds great, and you can use it with multiple consoles, not just the PlayStation 4. The Platinum is a definite step up from Sony's Gold headset in terms of fit and finish, but the flagship feature -- 3D audio -- still doesn't have wide enough games support to justify the price.
