The Remarkable 2 excels at providing a paper-like writing experience with a minimum of distractions. At its core it is designed for writing—that’s what it does well, better than anything else on the current market. If you need a dedicated notepad the Remarkable is the device to get. Just don’t expect a Kindle-like set of reading features.

reMarkable 2 surprisingly lives up to its branding: it really is remarkable. While not identical to writing on paper, it begins to feel natural within minutes, in a way that scribbling on an iPad with an Apple Pencil never quite does.

Sometimes a gadget comes along that's so niche and limited in its purpose that for most people it'd be a needless expense. But for those who want to reduce their impact on the planet but love handwriting notes, plans and journals, the ReMarkable 2 is simply divine. With a backlight on the display it'd be almost perfect, although it's not cheap.

Whether that's enough to warrant $400 on a super-niche tablet is up to you. Thankfully, you'll have plenty of time to chew on your decision: If you haven't already pre-ordered one of these things, you're not getting one until November at the earliest. With any luck, reMarkable will address some of these shortcomings with new software before people even have to deal with them.

Hands on: I’ve been properly charmed by the Remarkable 2. It’s different from any other tablet out there and while it’s oh so niche, it knows what it wants to be and it’s very good at what it does. Would it replace an iPad Pro in my bag if I could only choose one? Probably not, but on a desk it’ll be my new notebook.
