AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

Overview

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX is a pretty good GPU, at least relative to its GeForce competitor, but whether or not it's worth $1,000 will depend on how much stock you place in ray tracing performance. For those with previous generation flagships, the 7900 XTX simply won't be worth the upgrade and while it's a big leap forward from something like the Radeon 6800, it's also roughly twice the price, so it's not moving the needle forward in terms of value.

Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 vs. AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX: Essentially, if you want the best of the best, it's the RTX 4090, which appeals to those with ample budgets. The 7900 XTX, on the other hand, really has to earn your money. While it might be 18% cheaper than the RTX 4080 for similar overall performance, its ray tracing performance is often much worse, and its feature set can be lacking, either in support or quality.

Radeon RX 7900 XTX vs. GeForce RTX 4080: The 7900 XTX is competing with a far worse value product in the RTX 4080, and while the Radeon GPU is cheaper, it's also generally inferior when it comes to ray tracing performance, it still lacks a true upscaling competitor to the widely supported DLSS, it sucks down quite a bit more power and driver support isn't as mature with a few strange niggles here and there.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is one of the most powerful graphics cards on the market, making it ideal for 4K gaming and creative professionals. The magic of DLSS will still prove tempting to switch over to Nvidia, but the RX 7900 XTX undoubtedly offers better value than the RTX 4090 for raw 4K performance.

The ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC Edition is a 4K beast and a direct competitor to the GeForce RTX 4080. It's also a custom 7900 XTX from ASUS that benefits from some OC action, better thermals, and impressive cooling.

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT are a solid step forward for AMD, especially when it comes to 4K gaming. But I'm hoping the company can get its driver situation in order, and perhaps eke out better ray tracing performance in the process. Most gamers are still better off waiting for AMD and NVIDIA's next-gen mid-range cards, which are sure to be launching soon. But if you're an avowed AMD fan, you've finally got the high-end upgrade you've been waiting for.

For hundreds of dollars less, AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX both sprints past the RTX 4080 and challenges the RTX 4090 too—it can sometimes beat Nvidia’s best GPU. Its compact reference design and use of traditional 8-pin power connectors lets it fit into most PCs easily as well. AMD’s latest also offers acceptable ray tracing performance, though Nvidia holds its lead. The XTX isn’t perfect—some sporadic bugs did appear during our tests—but overall it’s a great card without a price premium over last gen.

The 7900 XTX really is a BEAST of a card, so the big question is, are you going to get one, are you going to wait for the AIB cards, or are you waiting for something lower-end that can harness the true potential of RDNA 3? I can’t see them being too far away, maybe with CES around the corner, that’s what AMD will announce? It’s an exciting time to be a gamer, and most importantly, will we now see the RTX 4080 drop in price? We’ll have to wait and see.
