With up to six-cores, faster RAM, and improved graphics the 2019 27in iMac finally catches up with, and overtakes, the MacBook Pro. The build-to-order options make it a flexible if expensive option and we were holding out for a design change. But if you want a powerful iMac and don't need the iMac Pro, the 27in version is a better option than the 21.5in - just.

If you want a Mac desktop with high graphics performance, the iMac is your only option - I'm not counting the iMac Pro as a separate Mac here, it's a souped up iMac and the same applies. This will remain true until the much delayed Mac Pro appears - and we still don't know when that is. So you'll want the iMac for its performance and you'll likely buy it, but don't be surprised if you don't feel a little guilty about that.

From the outside, the iMac is the same. We've stressed that point enough. That means it doesn't grab a lot of headlines and if you skimmed the text, this could be a review from five years ago. However, that doesn't mean that this isn't a powerful, and capable machine in 2019.

The overlap between the iMac and iMac Pro ranges is a little puzzling, but the improved performance of the 2019 iMac will be welcomed by owners of older Mac models who have eyed the iMac Pro with envy and empty pockets. The iMac Pro – with up to 18 cores in its Xeon processor – will still be more adept at workstation-level tasks, such as 3D animation or editing multiple streams of 4K video. But for many professional users in fields such as video, design and audio, the 2019 edition of the standard 27-inch iMac will be a very welcome upgrade.
