Popcorn Time just can't stay out of the headlines. One of their many different branches, the popular Popcorntime.io website, has been shut down indefinitely.

Torrent Freak reported Popcorntime.io's closure over the weekend, after a rough week for its development team. Some of the site's staff left because there were fears that an upcoming paid-for VPN service could get them into legal trouble. One of the staff members who left happened to control the Popcorntime.io domain.

At first the site looked like it would be fine, but eventually the group said that something was messing with the infrastructure, mainly the DNS, service, and they ran into trouble with their Internet provider. They took to Twitter to announce the close and encourage people to use their legal service, Butter.

Other Popcorn Time services are still available, such as Time4Popcorn, but they are generally considered less safe and secure. Though, considering the questionable legality of the whole operation, safety and security become relative. Another branch of Popcorn Time, Browser Popcorn, was recently launched and shuttered within a few days, and there's no indication it will be back anytime soon. One reason this may be the end of times for Popcorn Time is that there are very few popcorn-oriented names left to use.
