Amazon Echo - 2017

Overview

Its audio quality isn't as good as Google Home's, but the Echo's Skills are what really sets it apart. In addition to being found on a wide range of products, Alexa's ability to work with a plethora of services and devices makes it more versatile for more users. Like the lead Apple initially had with its App Store, it may be some time before other smart speakers can catch up to the capabilities of the Echo.

This 2nd-generation Echo isn’t a bad product, it’s just not the best Alexa-powered speaker you can buy for the money.

The best thing about the new Amazon Echo? Its price. At $100, it’s cheaper than the original, Google Home and Sonos One. But it also sounds worse than those devices, delivering somewhat flat audio that emphasizes the high end and vocals at the expense of bass. Still, the second-generation Echo is quick to decipher your commands and Alexa is smart as a whip. Unless you're married to Google Assistant or Siri, this is a decent option for those buying their first smart speaker.

Alexa is still the most compelling voice control platform, and the new and improved Echo should only boost her momentum. It's well worth $100.
