It's disappointing to see The Town of Light struggle so often, because the story it presents is both harrowing and captivating at times. While there's an interesting narrative to be found in its world, the moment-to-moment gameplay and repetitive environments impose an unavoidable malaise.

The Town of Light is an ambitious game to cover such heavy subject matter. There’s no real action to be found, just exploration and a bleak but intriguing story to be told. The game is rather short; most players can expect to complete a playthrough in under five hours, but that seems like a good length for this type of experience.

There's no conspiracy, no mystery, no oogie-boogie monster in the basement. The Town of Light is simply a slice of history that welcomes you into its halls to share your empathy, without locking the doors behind you.

Uneven, bleak and unflinching. You won't enjoy it, but it's one of a kind.
