Metro Exodus

Overview

Pros & Cons

Reviews

Similar Games

Price: $20

Metro Exodus takes the fear-inducing formula of the series and transplants it into expansive, sandbox-like levels without losing any of the oppressive tension that makes the Metro games memorable and distinctive among post-apocalyptic first-person shooters. It’s a frequently exhilarating and densely atmospheric journey across a Russian dystopia brimming with detail and deadly inhabitants, and well worth the trip for its consistently effective use of survival horror and hair-raising action. -- As reviewed by IGN

Expert reviews and ratings

PC Graphics Performance: Overall the game looks great, it’s highly detailed and this is largely why it’s so demanding. Both AMD and Nvidia GPUs perform well and we were most impressed with how old products like the Radeon HD 7970 performed using the medium quality setting.

The open sandboxes may not be strongest addition, but the game still embraces the sense of vulnerability and post-apocalyptic terror alongside impactful weapons used in refined combat and stealth scenarios. You may miss the mystery and intrigue of the previous games, but Exodus puts together a charismatic crew of friends and family that you'll want to follow to the ends of the earth.

Metro Exodus largely succeeds in its ambitions. The freeform sandboxes give players more agency to play how they want to play, and the smart level design and well-tuned pacing keep the experience feeling fresh throughout the campaign. The story may suffer from weak acting and 4A’s decision to keep Artyom a silent protagonist, but these shortcomings don’t stop me from recommending the game to both newcomers and series fans.

By HardcoreGamer on February 13, 2019 80

Metro Exodus proves that after a six year break this franchise is just as relevant and enjoyable as ever. Stepping out into the surface removes the confined feeling of the previous entries as Artyom explores the world after uncovering the truth about the end of the war. This sense of freedom brings Metro Exodus closer to the feel of other first-person action RPGs, but it never strays too far away from the story-driven path.

By The Telegraph on February 13, 2019 80

But it is at its best tends to be when you are on your own, exploring a beautifully drawn post-nuclear wilderness or creeping through the dark, lighter in hand. That Metro Exodus can do both with equally aplomb is arguably its greatest strength.

By AUS Gamers on February 13, 2019 95

Sometimes clunky writing and cheesy voice-acting, the odd enemy that glitches out animation-wise, a story sequence that doesn’t trigger forcing a reload. Stuff that, like the mask mechanic found within, dissipates after a good wipe of the hand. Metro Exodus is without a doubt a fantastic single-player story-driven shooter. An experience that lives up to its ambition and promise, offering challenge and surprise in equal measure.

By Push Square on February 13, 2019 60

While Metro: Exodus delivers on its promise of deep and meaningful combat situations that let you approach encounters from any angle you can think of, its technical shortcomings are simply unforgivable. Combine that with a plot that doesn’t answer its most intriguing questions and you’ve got an experience that will please at times, but will also disappoint those looking for something meaningful outside of the distribution of bullets.

By PowerUnlimited on February 13, 2019 65

By CheatCodeCentral on February 13, 2019 90

Metro Exodus is a departure from the cookie-cutter shooters, focusing on a gripping single-player narrative and a more cautious pace than the adrenaline fueled, multiplayer-focused titles bloating the genre. Every character is fully fleshed out, the stealth and survival mechanics are a delight for careful, completionist gamers, and the setting is as varied and detailed a post-apocalyptic playground as you’re going to find. A voice to go with Artyom’s soul would have been nice, as well as some AI tweaking, but the thoughtful additions and improvements from previous Metro games gives Exodus a fresh experience for anyone ready for a wild train ride.

By WCCFTech on February 13, 2019 90

From other survivors who are more likely to kill you than talk to you, mutant creatures and ghouls that want nothing more than to feast on you and the hazards of the environment, it's a game that wants you on the edge of your seat. It masters this with ease. From tight gunplay to well-developed stealth mechanics, the game offers variety within the confines of its own rules. The only downsides are average-at-best voice acting and the game ignoring its own stealth leanings to force combat with incredibly difficult bosses. All in all, Metro Exodus is a fantastic game that you'd be worse off for missing out.

By GamesRadar on February 13, 2019 90

A first-person survival shooter that's as engrossing as it is unnerving, Metro Exodus tells a powerfully human story in a world that's equal parts style and substance.

By DualShockers on February 13, 2019 85

Metro Exodus expands on what has made the series so unique from anything else with a compelling mix of action, stealth, survival, and horror. Much like how the Aurora has brought Artyom and his companions to new, uncharted territories, Metro Exodus is bringing the series into a new direction that seems to have so many possibilities.

By Vandal on February 13, 2019 84
