Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the champion of the RTS genre we deserve. The title itself may be twenty years old, but that hasn’t stopped this edition from being the best on the market. With aesthetics being painstakingly remastered and restored for modern systems, Age of Empires II has never looked or sounded better. Brand new, never-before-seen content is introduced to make the title more than just a remaster of an old game.

Age of Empires has been a staple of the real-time strategy genre for many years, and one might even say it brought it to the mainstream. First launched in 1997, the title garnered critical acclaim, making it an instant success. It featured several...

Whether you really wanted it this way or not, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is about as pure of a remaster as you're ever going to find. The visuals and sound are all upgraded for a modern era without changing the heart of the game. However, with...

This isn't to say you won't get anything out of it at all, but there are countless better ways to spend 40 hours of your time than cooing at how shiny the new Hoplites look. Age of Empires may have sharpened its spears and polished its shields, but as experiences go it remains distinctly last millennium.

I'll be honest; Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a bit of a hard sell at this stage. At this point in time, it's just Age of Empires: Gold Edition with fresh makeup; it's almost exactly as you'd remember it though, warts and all. Yet there's always...

Booting up Age of Empires: Definitive Edition for the first time is immediately surprising. The original game launched more than two decades ago, but it's been refined and revived for 2018, ready for modern audiences--or at least old players with new...

The title doesn't lie, in other words. If you're dead set on playing the original Age of Empires, this is the best way to do so. It is the Definitive Edition. The question is whether that's appealing to you or not.For me? I've enjoyed it well enough. As...
