The Far Cry series took a surprising turn by setting the last game during the Mesolithic period, which saw guns replaced with bows and spears. Now, rumors say the next title in the series will return to slightly more modern times and take place during the era of cowboys and the Wild West .

Website Great Falls Tribune reports that a church on the northeastern Montana prairie will feature in an upcoming video game. It also writes that a film crew was shooting a live-action trailer for the title. While he wouldn't reveal the name, Jeff Guillot, a producer on the shoot, said it was a sequel to an existing global franchise set for release this September. He added that the production areas "stretched more than 5,000 miles from California to Montana."

The crew used a drone to film "a man fighting with another man near a hanging bell as a train rolled by on the tracks a half-mile away." The details suggest a game with a Wild West theme, leading to speculation it was a promo for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, but evidence suggests otherwise.

Guillot has a history with Ubisoft, having worked on promo campaigns for Driver, Red Steel 2, and a live-action trailer for Far Cry Primal, all of which suggests this is another Ubisoft-related project. There's also this statement from Kotaku's Jason Schreier.

This is all very vague so I don't want to put the wrong pieces together and make an educated guess that turns out to be incorrect, but just to help prevent too many people from getting excited, I don't think this is RDR2; I think it's the next game in a different series that I've heard is set in a location that sounds a lot like this. Rockstar doesn't do live-action trailers, after all.

Another compelling piece of evidence is the fact a 2015 Ubisoft poll on future Far Cry settings included the option for "a Spaghetti Western-style tale in late 19th Century America."

Ubisoft has confirmed it will be releasing four AAA titles before the end of its fiscal year. With one of them almost certainly the next Assassin's Creed (likely called Origins), and South Park: The Fractured but Whole possibly another, there's a strong chance one of the remaining two games will be a new Far Cry.
