Nintendo earlier this year celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Nintendo 64 console. In honor of the occasion, Dave Pickett from the YouTube channel BRICK 101 set about remaking the entire game in 2D using Super Mario Maker.

Pickett split the project into five segments, the last of which featuring Tick Tock Clock, Rainbow Ride, Wing Mario over the Rainbow and Bowser in the Sky was recently released.

As you may know, Super Mario Maker only allows users to create games in 2D meaning Pickett had to do a lot of creative thinking to convert the groundbreaking Super Mario 64 into a 2D platformer. I've yet to play the demake but based on the clips I've seen and feedback on YouTube, he did a stellar job of capturing the essence of the original.

Super Mario 64 arrived on September 29, 1995 as one of only two Nintendo 64 launch titles in the US. The game's impact and legacy simply cannot be understated. Many (myself included) consider it to be the most technically impressive launch title across any console and one of the best video games of all time.

If you somehow haven't played Super Mario 64, you owe it to yourself to do so either via the Wii U Virtual Console, an emulator on your PC or best yet, on the Nintendo 64 itself. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.
