Barack Obama set a Guinness World Record last year for the shortest amount of time to reach one million followers on Twitter, having done so in less than five hours. It's an opportunity that the 45th president of the United States won't even have according to the White House.

Now nearing the end of his second term, the nation's first social media president will hand off the Twitter handle @POTUS to the next in line, be it Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. The account will retain its more than 11.1 million followers but will start with a clean slate and no tweets on the timeline.

All of the previous tweets associated with Obama under the @POTUS handle will be transitioned to a new handle - @POTUS44 - that'll be maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and remain publicly available on Twitter.

The same will be done with other administration accounts including @WhiteHouse, @FLOTUS, @PressSec and @VP across various other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Tumblr, just to name a few.

Elsewhere, the White House notes that the code for petition site We the People has been open sourced and they'll take every step to allow future administrations to carry on the tradition of running it (should they elect to do so).

The @POTUS Twitter handle and other accounts will be handed over to the 45th president of the United States on January 20, 2017.
