Wow, that didn't take long. Just one day after Verizon revealed it would be acquiring Yahoo for $4.83 billion, Tumblr quietly announced intentions to introduce ads across its more than 300 million blogs (Yahoo, as you may recall, purchased the popular blogging site in 2013 for $1.1 billion).

In a brief post on the Staff Tumblr page, the company said it will flip the switch on ads this Thursday to allow people to start making money from their blogs.

If you already operate a successful Tumblr blog, why not make a little extra money on the side, no? It seems like a great way to monetize blogs although naturally, not everyone is interested in ads, even if they'll be getting a cut of the revenues.

That said, Tumblr notes that you can turn off advertising in the settings menu if you aren't comfortable with it. For those that do wish to partake, note that you'll have to register for the program to get in on the action.

Unfortunately, that's about all we know at this time. Tumblr said it is still hammering out the fine details of the partner program but once everything has been finalized, they'll share the details on the Staff blog.

The company worded its announcement in a way that says the offer will only be afforded to "eligible" Tumblrs like musician, fan artist, poet and so on. Although not specified, I suspect adult content blogs won't qualify.
