Reboots can be tricky, especially in a day and age when it seems as though Hollywood has run out of original movie ideas. The modern reboot formula typically extends beyond the big screen to include stuff like games, toys and other memorabilia designed to milk the franchise for everything it's worth (not that there's anything wrong with that).

When the new Ghostbusters film from Sony Pictures hits theaters this summer, it'll be accompanied by a new game courtesy of Activision.

Ghostbusters is described as a third-person action role-playing game that offers up to four-player local co-op, deviating away from earlier entries. The game takes place after the events of the film and follows a new group of rookies fighting rogue spirits as the "now-famous" Ghostbusters are busy taking on high-profile poltergeists.

Activision says each player can level up their character's abilities and gear by completing objectives, battling ghosts and discovering hidden collectibles. Each character is said to offer their own unique personality and play style.

As EuroGamer points out, the game has an arcade-like feel and loosely resembles Diablo.

Ghostbusters lands on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on July 12. There's also a mobile game in the pipeline called Ghostbusters: Slime City that's scheduled to arrive in July for Android, iOS and Kindle devices.
