The Internet of Things is already impacting our daily lives - and our wallets - in positive ways. As is often the case in emerging industries, several major players are jockeying for market share. Such competition does wonders for innovation while simultaneously creating a lot of fragmentation.
Google's Nest is hoping to eliminate some of those frustrations with the expansion of its Works with Nest program to include Nest Weave, the protocol that allows its connected thermostat, smoke detector and camera products to wirelessly communicate with each other.
As SlashGear explains, Nest launched its Works with Nest program last year. It, too, is a method for device manufacturers to connect their products with those on the Nest network and gain access to many of its products' features via a cloud API.
Nest Weave features low power requirements, excellent range and low latency. There's also error checking meaning, for example, if you turn off a wireless light using the Nest app, you'll know if it actually turned off or not.
A number of partners including Big Ass Solutions, Daikin North America, GE branded lighting controls, Hunter Douglas, iHome, Legrand, LIFX, Lutron Electronics, P&G, Philips hue, Rachio, Somfy, SkyBell, Tyco and Belkin WeMo have confirmed plans to adopt Weave.
Nest is also launching a Works with Nest store, making it painless for consumers to find and buy products compatible with its platform.
