At this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Nintendo is bringing back its one-off video game competition last held 25 years ago.
The 2015 Nintendo World Championships kick off on May 30 at select Best Buy stores around the country. Winners from the regional qualifier will advance to the next stage of the competition. Nintendo plans to crown just one champion this year during the livestreamed final on June 14 during E3.
The event is a throwback to the original Nintendo World Championships, a competition spanning 29 cities across the US held in 1990. Contestants in three different age groups competed in a timed run across three mini games on a custom NES cartridge.
Specifically, gamers had to collect 50 coins in Super Mario Bros., complete a special track in Rad Racer then get the highest score possible in Tetris with the remaining time left on the clock. Contestants had just six minutes and 21 seconds of play time to rack up the highest score possible.
Nintendo hasn't yet revealed which game(s) players will be competing in this time around. Considering the company's promo video for E3, it's entirely possible that we could see some of Nintendo's classic games (fingers crossed). We also don't know what sort of prizes will be up for grabs but either way, I'll be tuning in for the nostalgia factor.
