It's no secret that the Japanese have a certain affinity for coming up with odd creations and while their latest may very well fall into that category, it is equal parts awesome.

Brave Robotics, Asratec Corp. and Transformer creator Tomy Co. Ltd have come together to create a nearly five-foot-tall fully-functional Transformer prototype named J-deite Quarter. The eventual goal is far more ambitious, however, as they ultimately aim to build a robot that is 5 meters long.

The current prototype tips the scales at 77 pounds and can travel at speeds of up to 6 MPH as a car and 0.6 MPH as a walking Transformer.

The next step is to build a 2.5 meter long robot by 2016.
