Team Fortress 2 will be the first official game to support the Oculus Rift according to Valve programmer Joe Ludwig. The company is planning to release an update that will allow gamers to play in VR mode sometime within the next couple of weeks.

During a recent tour of Valve's offices, Ludwig told Engadget that anyone with an Oculus Rift dev kit will be able to play Team Fortress 2 alongside other gamers in public servers. It's worth pointing out, however, that "everybody" only includes Windows gamers for the time being. The programmer said they don't have a Mac or Linux SDK from Oculus just yet but once it arrives, they will get it ported over to other platforms.

The Oculus SDK will only support Windows when it launches but OS X and Linux versions will arrive as quickly as possible thereafter, according to Nate Mitchell, VP of product at Oculus.

Meanwhile, Valve will host two virtual reality-themed chats during the Game Developers Conference next week. It's here that Ludwig will give a speech titled "What We Learned Porting Team Fortress 2 to Virtual Reality" which will chronicle the steps necessary to get the game running on the Oculus Rift.

Valve's Michael Abrash will host a separate talk titled "Why Virtual Reality is Hard (And Where it Might be Going)" which as the title suggests, will be a more general talk on the subject. Abrash will also touch on why such technologies could become mainstream in the not-too-distant future. GDC 2013 kicks off on March 25 and runs through the 29th in San Francisco.
