iOS 14 is said to support almost all iOS 13 devices, including iPhone SE

Why it matters: Apple is expected to announce the next version of iOS and iPadOS at its annual WWDC conference in June, and that means some people are keen to know whether their devices are going to be supported for an OS upgrade. After a somewhat buggy iOS 13 release, Apple may have decided to continue supporting almost all of the devices that received the last update for at least one more major OS upgrade cycle.

According to a report from French website iPhoneSoft, many owners of older generations of iPhone and iPad can collectively breathe a sigh of relief. There's enough indication out there that Apple is going to support pretty much any device that was able to receive the last major upgrade to iOS 13.

This means that if you happen to be holding on to your iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, or iPhone SE, you'll be able to enjoy at least one more major iOS upgrade. Considering these are devices released in the 2015-2016 timeframe, it's a blessing that Android users can only dream of even on the high-end side.

The story is a bit different if you own an iPad Mini 4 or iPad Air 2, which use slower A8 and A8x processors, which apparently won't make the cut. In the case of iPod touch, you'll only get the next iOS upgrade as long as you have the latest version that launched last year.

After a relatively buggy iOS 13 release, Apple last year had to release several updates to fix glaring issues, such as the aggressive background resource management that was a little too keen on killing all apps that you left open.

The good news is that Apple is said to have changed the development process of iOS 14 to focus more on delivering a stable and ironed out upgrade as opposed to adding as many features as possible. This means that nice things like proper call verification may not be on the horizon, but at least you'll have fewer bugs to worry about when upgrading.

What? Old hardware is old. Do you also accuse MS of designed obsolescence for not supporting windows 10 on your pentium III?

The A8 is a 5 year old SOC, and will be 6 years old by the time iOS 14 comes out. These devices do not just stop working without the latest iOS, it takes years before old OS support is dropped. This year, with iOS 13 out, we finally saw our education apps at work stop updating on our ipad 2s with iOS 9. It only took 4 years after their last update.

At some point your hardware becomes naturally obsolete to the march if improved tech, your batteries will start failing, and you'll be looking for new hardware. It's the nature of the beast.To be angry at apple for planned obsolescence when google can barely manage 3 years of upates, and most androids get 2 years at most, usually with only a singe year of feature updates, motnhs if not years late, without any of the tablet optimizations that apple does for the ipads, is laughable.

Hopefully they fix the browser in iOS 14. In iOS 13, my pages have been not loading and I often have to refresh the page for it to load and/or kill and relaunch the process. Very annoying.

I'm not angry, my friend. No need to be confrontational.

You're not wrong though regarding shifting technologies and the imminent progression association with it. 5 or 6 years is an eternity in tech. I don't mind having the latest and greatest, it's just not always necessary and Apple would prefer that we did so we can line their pockets.

That said, the fact that developers (like myself) will begin to write apps that require the latest version of iOS (even though their own program will not necessarily require the latest iOS version to run). This will ultimately mean that people who wish to use a tablet till they are completely dead are forced to upgrade, not because the hardware isn't capable, but because the application developer ticks a box off that forces the app to require the latest OS. I know... first world problems to be sure. haha

I disagree to an extent. If an old piece of H/W still does the job for you, no need to replace it until it craps out. As long as it runs with it plugged into an electrical outlet, and that is acceptable, then it is still usable.
I understand if I am adding new gimmicks on H/W and I need to expand the size of the OS to handle it, the OS may be too large to be instaled on older H/W, but if that new gadgetry and O/S is not needed, why replace.
