GM is investing $3 billion to build electric vehicles in Detroit

What just happened? General Motors on Monday moved one step closer to making its vision of an all-electric future a reality with the announcement of a substantial investment at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.

The automaker is setting aside $2.2 billion to convert the facility into its first dedicated entirely to building electric vehicles. At present, the Detroit-Hamtramck plant employs around 900 people who build the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6. It’ll go idle at the end of February as the renovations get under way.

Once fully operational, the investment will create more than 2,200 US manufacturing jobs.

The company’s first all-electric pickup truck is slated to enter production in late 2021. It’ll be followed by the Cruise Origin, the electric shuttle bus we profiled on TechSpot last week.

An additional $800 million will be used for supplier tooling and other projects related to the electric trucks, GM said.

GM isn’t the only automaker working on electrified pickups. Tesla unveiled its ambitiously designed Cybertruck late last year and Rivian is working on the R1T, a more conventional pickup that’ll be able to turn on a dime thanks to a feature quite literally called tank turn.

GM was even linked to rumors that it, along with Amazon, was interested in investing in Rivian roughly a year ago although it is unclear if a potential investment from either company ever panned out.

I said it before I will say it again. Massive waste of time.
We cant get to work in a decent time, because we have traffic jams and grid lock everywhere.
Work places either need to stagger there start and finishing times, or we need to cull the number of cars / human race.
Building more car shells is also stupid, as we can convert old petrol cars to electric. We are only going to waste more resources on these new vehicles.
What we should be doing though is doing away with the "look at me and my Jaguar/Porsche/Audi/Penis/Vagina" and everyone should have to check in on a train/bus/monorail system, and build places to work with those systems.

Or can we just wait til Apple make the iPortal.

Just can't happen soon enough, now if they would just solve the charge time / range issues they would convince a large number of hold outs. Of course, on the bad side; for those anticipating ending their lives the old hose in the tailpipe in the garage just ain't going to get it any longer!

Sorry, socialist utopias not happening anytime soon. Instead, I'll take good ol' capitalist economics FTW, Alex.

How long before Trump announces that it's happening because of him and ONLY him?
Yes, because everything has to revolve around Trump!? Your TDS is showing.

EVERY President takes credit for stuff happening under his administration, that's how it's always been (and Trump hasn't taken credit for this ). Obama should take credit for Detroit's sad state then...

Pollution and Warming aside, it's also about those almost sinful wealth-without-work fossil oil dependent nations/dictators and terrorists in Middle East.

If a president is gloating about keeping a single plant alive by giving out bundles of tax money, he is an *****. It's a clear photo-op for what is a short term solution. If you need to hand out large subsidies just to keep a single plant going, clearly that leaves the broader market with a big problem. Manufacturing is a systemic issue, not something that is solved on a case by case basis. Treating the symptom, not the cause.

Remember the carrier plant Trump "saved"? Yeah, neither do the workers: https://www.vox.com/first-person/2018/2/6/16976176/carrier-president-trump-layoffs

I should probably point out that the person who coined TDS, Charles Krauthammer, has made comments like this about Trump:

"Krauthammer opined that even bungled collusion is still collusion "

In addition

"The use of the term has been called part of a broader GOP strategy to discredit criticisms of Trump's actions, as a way of "reframing" the discussion by suggesting his political opponents are incapable of accurately perceiving the world. "

In otherwords, it's not an actual argument against any particular point. You don't debate someone by calling them deranged, that's an ad hominem attack.

By saying umbala has TDS, you are in fact failing to provide any argument and instead making a personal attack to discredit his validity.

I don't think he was challenging that presidents take credit for certain things during their presidency, only that Trump is on an entirely different level. The fact that the entire republican party is essentially at the point where you either fellate Trump or you are removed says enough. The fact that there has not been a press conference since god knows when because someone might hurt Trump's feelings says enough. It's very dictator like.

If you like higher taxes, fees, tolls , banning of stupid $hit like straws, plastic bags, benefits for illegals & pressing #2 for English then vote for Democrats. I live in CT and have family in California & New York so I know what I'm talking about True dictators were Obama and most Democrat politicians

Back to the subject....................... Nice thing with electric cars is that you don't need gas, coolant, & other toxic crap. Less moving parts mean less garbage at the dumps & less production at factories.

If you like fake tax cuts, constant lies, constant trolling on twitter , banning of rules that protect the environment - of which most are responsible for the clean air we breath today, fake trade agreements that have made things worse for countless numbers of US citizens, cannot count beyond 2, get angry when people are not speaking your language because they must be saying something derogatory about you, then vote for Trump - again. I could not possibly tell what a real dictator looks like so trust me, vote for Trump - again.
Fixed!

Beyond this - we agree about EVs

What is yet another ad hominem attack using the word socialist?

Not ad hom, a very specific answer to the following:

"Work places either need to stagger there start and finishing times, or we need to cull the number of cars / human race."

This is an aspect of Socialism, doing something that is arguably better for the common good. But this will never happen in reality.

https://turbotax.intuit.ca/.../an-overview-of-federal-tax...

The highest tax bracket in canada is 33% for those that make over 214,000 CAD or 164,000 USD. Let's say person A makes $180,000 and is taxed at 30% in Canada. If you account for provincial tax of anywhere from 0% to 10%, you are looking at 40% at the most. Then again, a person in the US with the same income would be taxed at 32% federal and anywhere from 0 - 11.5% state tax, so 43.5% at the most. So in fact, assuming worst case for each, you'd be paying more in the US then in Canada. That's without factoring in healthcare costs for that person in the US. Average cost per capita in the US is 10,224 USD. https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-of-healthcare...

That's 10,224 USD per person.

In addition, Canadians who make under 41,000 USD a year pay a lower rate then their American counterparts.

Canada's tax system is structured similarly to the united states, in that there are federal taxes and regional (state or province taxes) In canada you pay your federal and your provincial taxes. In the US you pay your federal and state.

In general, if you are middle class you will be taxed a similar amount in Canada as you were in the US, excluding other costs like Healthcare in the US.

Perhaps if the US didn't add another 200 billion plus onto it's already exploding defense budget, it could actually afford to take care of it's ailing citizens. Then again, that 200 billion is completely debt funded. FYI the US is currently sitting at 106% debt to GDP ratio, a new record. The only people in the US paying a lower tax rate are the rich, who on average pay an effective tax rate of under 10% and companies, some of which are now getting tax refunds instead of paying.
